Our Moshi Youth Program
Praise, positive reinforcement, and incentives
Our programs are based on our knowledge and understanding that a structured program works best on young minds and bodies. Successful completion of the requirements of each Belt ranking provides a sense of accomplishment. Training for each level adds to self-esteem and confidence grows as the child grows.
We know how to motivate, captivate interest, inspire, and encourage children. We explain and reinforce concepts and skills in a way that your child learns best, with a staff of highly skilled instructors and child safety experts.
Getting started is easy! Have your son or daughter come in for a free week's orientation with one of our instructors; we even furnish the trial uniform free for the week. Afterwards, you will have a consultation to discuss goals, scheduling, and our programs. Call 540-434-8824 for your free week.
Healthy Body = Healthy Mind
Many overweight children gain better health by taking off the extra weight through self-discipline and exercise. Shy children are often brought out of their shell. Children who respect themselves and take pride in their achievements are much less likely to fall victim to drugs and other undesired behavior. The best part is, the program really works, so all of our efforts create happier, safer kids, and significantly reduce incidents of bullying and school violence. This, after all, is our driving force.
Television, Soft drinks, Video Games, and Fast Food
These are just a few of the challenges children face today. Combine these with a decrease in school physical education classes, and it is easy to see why weight problems and obesity among children have more than doubled in our country in the last twenty years. At Halterman Karate, we help children develop a healthy mind and body, so they have the energy and fitness to face life's challenges, and succeed!

Let's take a closer look...
We begin with self-discipline, or what we like to call a "non-quitting spirit". But... before self-discipline can be developed, discipline must come from an external source, your Halterman Karate instructor. Once students start to achieve, they begin to apply self-discipline, which leads to greater achievement, and achievement develops confidence. Self-discipline itself is not enough; we also teach children the art of self-defense, an important life skill. Children today face more bullies and negative peer pressure than ever before, so it is essential they have the skills necessary to distinguish between good and bad, right or wrong.
This is why at Halterman Karate, we teach a realistic, streetwise self-defense system that combines the most effective kickboxing and grappling techniques. Children are taught to defend themselves in virtually any situation, whether they are standing up or end up on the ground. They also learn Conflict Resolution, Leadership, and when they should and shouldn't use their newfound skills.
SERIOUS STUFF?
If this sounds like serious stuff, don't worry! Our children's classes are taught in a safe, fun, and exciting environment, where students are not compared to each other, but progress at their own pace. The competition is "from oneself to oneself".
Studies have shown that...
Children who learn self-defense become more assertive and less aggressive. Children who know how to defend themselves typically don't have to since they carry themselves in a more confident manner. Training in the martial arts is designed to cultivate and stimulate increased physical prowess, cardiovascular enrichment, self defense, sport, Asian culture, and an overall condition of Homeostasis (complete unity of body health). The proper study of the martial arts serves to give students a feeling of self confidence based upon individual accomplishments rather than team victory or defeat of an opponent.

Good News for A.D.D. & A.D.H.D. Children
Some parents who bring their children to Halterman Karate are concerned about their child's ability to concentrate well enough to participate in our programs. We have good news for you: Halterman Karate has proven benefits to children with ADD/ADHD.
Treating Hyperactive Children
Halterman Karate can and should be one of the cornerstones of treatment of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. My experience has convinced me that helping a child to succeed in sports and recreational programs can make an important contribution to their therapy. Carefully chosen activities, combined with the use of appropriate and dedicated staff, can help enhance a child's confidence, self-esteem, fitness, and social adjustment.
Karate is, in my experience, one of the most enjoyable sports for hyperactive children. Parents often do a double-take when karate is mentioned, fearing that a martial art will lead to serious social problems for their children because of their impulsiveness and aggressiveness. But to me, karate is the most therapeutic program for children with this syndrome, and children can start as early as four years of age. Karate is beneficial because it involves structure, rules, rituals, a stop-and-think attitude, and absolute obedience. No techniques are taught until the children have learned to stop, listen, and think. Classes are usually small. The techniques are monitored carefully, emphasizing over and over that these sports are not to be used for any aggressive play. Students who disobey the rules are usually expelled from the class.
Martial arts training can be entered into a very young age, and it is very common to see young children studying the martial arts, as well as being dazzled by the feats of students who are in their sixties or seventies. Discipline and structure are the key words in our schools. Students are taught to be mannered, respectful contributors to their communities.
Testing for Rank
Advancement is an individual endeavor, and is based upon individual initiative, physical and mental ability, character, integrity, and dedication. Additionally, young students are often required to show academic report cards to their instructors as an indication of required academic stability in their communities.
